When I log in, I move to the next page and I am signed back out. What is happening?

Our site is heavily dependent on what are called "cookies," which are placed on your computer by our site and contain data such as your login credentials and other information specific to you. This allows the site to be relieved from having to memorize this data and the site can move more quickly.
If your computer is blocking cookies, your log in data is not being saved by your computer and you will continue to be logged out every time you change pages. You will need to change your cookie settings in order for the site to function properly.

We support all major web browsers including Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Netscape, and Opera. We support Windows, Mac, Unix, and Linux operating systems.

|

Our office uses Windows based systems and we test on Internet Explorer and on Firefox. Many of our users utilize Mac systems and have not reported interaction problems between the site and operating system.

Please verify that you are indeed signed up to receive emails on your Account Settings page. Also, please verify that your email address is correct on the website. Finally, please ensure that TerraServer is not being blocked by your spam filter.

What are cookies?
|
|
|
Cookies are text files sent by a website into your web browser and then referenced back to the website each time the browser accesses the site. The website uses these text files to authenticate and keep track of log in credentials, user preferences, and shopping cart contents for a specific browser. As you can tell, they are very important on a site such as ours.

Why does TerraServer use cookies?
|
|
The web is what is known as stateless. You make a request, the server returns the page to you, and then forgets about you. In many cases, settings need to be maintained as you interact with the website. Two major ways of tracking state information is with session variables or with cookies.
Session variables time out after a certain amount of time and put a lot of strain on the server. If you've ever come back to a site after lunch and were logged off of it, then you've seen session variables.
Cookies don't have this timeout problem. Since the info is stored on your computer, then there isn't the stress on the server. The big drawback of cookies is that some people turn them off, which causes a problem with TerraServer. Previously, we used session cookies, but felt cookies were a better choice due to performance reasons.

How do I change my cookie settings?

Internet Explorer:
Go to Tools and then Internet Options
Click on the Security Tab.
Default setting is Medium and our site will work with that setting. If you need to keep your setting at a higher level, add us to your Trusted Sites.
Click on the Privacy Tab.
Again, default setting is Medium and our site will work with that setting. Here, you can click on Sites and then add our site and be sure to click Allow. The default button here is Block, so be careful.
Mozilla Firefox:
Go to Tools and then Options
Click on the Privacy Icon.
You may either put a check mark to allow cookies or uncheck the box and click on exceptions and allow Terraserver.com to use cookies.

Whenever I sign into the site, my browser freezes. This doesn’t happen on other sites, so what is wrong?

This was a problem on our old site but should not be an issue with our new site. If you are having this issue, try changing your display resolution to a higher setting. If this does not solve the issue, please contact us immediately using the Contact Page.
