When did TerraServer begin?
TerraServer.com, Inc. was founded in 1997 in Raleigh, North Carolina with the simple purpose of finding a commercial market for satellite imagery and aerial photography.

Is this the same TerraServer that I remember from the news in the late nineties?
On April 17th, 2000, TerraServer became the first company to release satellite imagery of Area 51, Nellis Air Force Base, and Groom Lake, and the Nevada Proving Grounds. This generated enough publicity and internet traffic to overload and shut down a major internet provider for over twelve hours. TerraServer still leads the aerial image distribution industry with a vast collection of imagery made possible through strong relationships with the leading image providers in the world.

Is there another TerraServer?
TerraServer, known as Aerial Images at the time, was part of the original project that involved Microsoft and Compaq as a demonstration of the real-world scalability of SQL Server. Aerial Images brought in satellite imagery from Sovinformsputnik (the Russian Space Agency) and GeoEye. After the agreement ended in January 2000, the operations split into two pieces. Aerial Images kept the TerraServer.com domain name to create a commercial site selling custom selected imagery. Microsoft went forward with their own imagery project that provides access to United States Geological Survey imagery. The Microsoft project has used the TerraServer brand name in a variety of ways including terraserver.homeadvisor.com, terraserver.microsoft.com, and terraserver.msn.com. In 2003, the Microsoft site rebranded itself as TerraServer-USA. Because of the name similarity, there exists a lot of user confusion between the two sites. However, TerraServer.com, Inc. is the sole owner of the registered trademark TerraServer.
