On April 17th, 2000, TerraServer became the first company to release satellite imagery of Area 51, Nellis Air Force Base, and Groom Lake, and the Nevada Proving Grounds. This generated enough publicity and internet traffic to overload and shut down a major internet provider for over twelve hours. TerraServer still leads the aerial image distribution industry with a vast collection of imagery made possible through strong relationships with the leading image providers in the world.
Microsoft has used the TerraServer brand name for a similar imagery website in a variety of ways including terraserver.homeadvisor.com, terraserver.microsoft.com, and terraserver.msn.com. In 2003, the Microsoft site rebranded itself as TerraServer-USA. Because of the name similarity, there exists a lot of user confusion between the two sites. However, TerraServer.com, Inc. is the sole owner of the registered trademark TerraServer.
No, TerraServer does not own or operate any satellites or imagery equipment. We do not take any aerial photos or satellite images. We are a distributor for a number of satellite and aerial image providers.
